GENERAL INFORMATION

The Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques (CMAS) is an international diving federation founded in Monaco in January 1959 and headquartered in Rome. CMAS International is represented worldwide by various diving organizations.

CMAS is the international umbrella organization for scuba diving and for diving-related sports such as finswimming, underwater navigation, and freediving.

The CMAS scuba diving training system consists of standardized courses divided into theory and practice. Theory is primarily taught through lectures, while practical training is conducted exclusively by instructors in swimming pools, confined open water, and open water. At the end of each course, a diving certification (brevet) is issued, which is recognized worldwide. CMAS is predominantly practiced in Europe. However, there are clubs and diving schools worldwide that offer CMAS-certified training. Some licensees use different names for the courses and offer intermediate or advanced levels. CMAS licensees are referred to as federations. There are national federations that are only authorized to provide training within their territory and represent CMAS in that country. In addition, there are a few international federations that are authorized to provide training worldwide. CMAS offers a four-level training system for learning scuba diving. The main training levels are standardized according to the international standards ISO 24801-2, ISO 24801-3, and ISO 11121.
